Frequently Asked Questions

What are supplemental educational services? Supplemental Educational Services are extra academic services during off-school hours, such as tutoring, that are offered free of cost to eligible students.

Who is eligible to receive services? Low-income students who are attending Title 1 schools that have not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in the same subject for 2 or more years are eligible. If the demand for services exceeds funding, eligible students with the greatest academic need receive first priority.

What is the purpose of the free tutoring? Services are designed to increase the academic achievement of low-income students, particularly in the areas of reading, language arts and mathematics.

What schools must offer the free tutoring services? Title 1 schools must offer Supplemental Educational Services after not making AYP in the same subject for two or more years.

How do parents get free tutoring services for their children? Each year, school districts must notify parents of eligible students that free tutoring services are available, identify state-approved area providers, and describe providers' services. Parents respond, within the timeline outlined in the notice, as to whether they are interested in receiving services for their child and indicate a service provider, if a choice is available.

What happens after a parent chooses a service provider? The parent contacts the provider and school district staff to discuss and agree upon specific goals for the child; to set up a schedule for services; and to decide how the child's progress will be measured. The school district pays for the tutoring services.
